The by far most important conversion project (closure and transformation of a military property) in the district of Bitburg-Prüm is the former NATO Air Base at Bitburg. In June 1993, the local councils in the region were informed that the American Air Base would be closed by the fiscal year 1995.
The 72 F-15 jet fighters stationed at Bitburg were withdrawn by March 1994 so that on 1 October 1994 the official return of the site to the Federal Republic of Germany could take place.
More than 1.200 employees are working at the Bitburg Airport currently.
Conversion in Bitburg means: opening up new prospects for companies and showing tailor-made solutions for operational requirements.
With this objective in mind, the Federal Republic of Germany as the owner, the Special Purpose Association Bitburg airfield as the local government agency responsible for planning and the State of Rhineland-Palatinate as the consulting and development authority cooperate closely.

The town planning agreements made between the federal government the state authorities and the Special Purpose Association Bitburg airfield in the years 1995 and 2004 act as a nationwide model. They regulate the financing of the development costs and ensure a cooperative procedure by all the agencies involved in the conversion process.
More than € 30 million were invested in the site infrastructure.
The site of approximately 500 ha in size with over 400 buildings opens up a wide spectrum of possibilities for utilisation.
The success of the cooperation model implemented in Bitburg speaks for itself: So far it has been possible to market about 160 ha of commercial and industrial areas. More than 180 companies have become established on the site. The companies provide jobs for more than 1,200 employees.
